as preferred supplier for 400 and 800G optics
The Hague – The Netherlands, July 1 2023
NL-ix today announced it has selected Flexoptix, a leading technology provider for optical components, as the preferred supplier for 400 and 800G plugables. NL-ix rolled out its 800G network, covering 30 datacenters across Amsterdam in December 2022 and is currently preparing to do the same in the Frankfurt region. Since the 800G technology is the most cost - and energy efficient option available, it will be the standard choice for the large Content providers, International Clouds and larger ISP’s and will play an important role in the future of the Internet.
The new 800G network is not only faster but also greener. The Nokia equipment uses about one eighth (12.5%) of the power per Gigabit of other equipment. (0.1065 Watts per Gb versus 0.9115 Watts). To implement this new technology quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively required a simplification of the network. The datacenters now have direct fiber connections to the core switches, which enables the use of ‘grey lasers’, eliminating the need for expensive and power-hungry optical transmission equipment. This reduces the cost per customer connection and further lowers overall power consumption. To directly connect the datacenters to the cores of the NL-ix network, 3200 fibers were deployed across Amsterdam via a range of partners.
Rene Fichtmueller, Aspirant Optician at Flexoptix: “The whole team at Flexoptix is super proud of being recognized and awarded as NL-ix‘ preferred supplier for optical universal transceivers.
With their inherent universal reconfigurability, NL-ix’ already existing universal optical transceivers - as well as the new ones to be purchased - are always ready for NL-ix‘ next networking move. Now at 400G and 800G together with Nokia. Futureproof, reusable and a bit greener by intention - whilst saving money and reducing stock levels for transceivers. We‘re looking forward to the next deployments with the NL-ix team.“
Dirk Kalkman, Network Architect at NL-ix: “Flexoptix is already NL-ix’s preferred supplier for 1, 10 and 100G optics and has proved to be a great supplier that delivers top quality, in time and for the right price. Flexoptix is a company that is a pleasure to work with. With direct access to 3rd level technical support, the great portal they have and the way we work together, made this an easy choice.”

Readying ourselves for the next period of growth we have rolled out 800G over all Amsterdam datacenters while at the same time simplifying our Amsterdam network and making it more efficient.
